What does an accountant do at METRO?
11 September 2025When people think about accounting jobs, they often imagine endless hours staring at Excel spreadsheets and never-ending columns of numbers. At METRO GSC, that image looks completely different.
Our accounting work involves responsibility for financial processes that support one of the largest wholesale networks in Europe. It means daily collaboration with international teams, working with advanced systems, and being in a dynamic environment that allows you to grow not only in accounting, but also in processes, technology, and automation.
What does an accountant do? Key responsibilities
At METRO GSC, we don’t work randomly – our teams are specialized and well-organized. Working in General Accounting (GA) or Accounts Receivable (AR), we handle tasks like sales reconciliation, balance confirmations, processing financial data for specific countries, communication with partners, and analysis of data reported in group systems.
It’s not just about posting entries – our specialists are responsible for data validation, resolving discrepancies, sending payment reminders, and monitoring receivables. Thanks to this everyday work, we can ensure the financial transparency and liquidity of the entire organization.

What does an accounting job involve? Responsibilities
At METRO GSC, accounting means more than numbers – it’s about decisions, processes, and continuous improvement. Accountants are responsible for transactions related to purchases and fixed assets, handling payments, issuing invoices, account analysis, supporting month-end closings, and participating in internal audits.
We also work on process documentation, implementing new systems, testing changes, and taking over responsibilities from other METRO locations. While knowledge and experience are important, equally essential is the willingness to learn and adapt.
A day in the life of an accountant
Our workday starts flexibly – usually between 7:45 and 9:45 AM, depending on the team’s needs. We work in a hybrid model, which means regular presence in the office (a few times a week), while still having room for remote work.
The day includes not only operational tasks – we regularly collaborate with teammates, solve daily issues, analyze data, and plan actions together. The end of the month is especially intense, but after each such period, we make time to rest and recharge.
Accounting teams and their roles
Our Szczecin-based solution center is a well-developed financial structure. In addition to GA and AR, we also have teams like:
- Fixed Assets & Stock – managing fixed assets and inventory
- Transfer Pricing & Intercompany Invoicing – handling transfer pricing and intercompany billing
- Treasury and Payments – managing liquidity and payments
Each team has clearly defined responsibilities, and close cooperation between them allows us to efficiently manage financial processes for over 20 countries.
What systems do accountants use at METRO?
At METRO GSC, we use advanced tools to enable effective and accurate work. Our core system is SAP – it’s where we post entries, analyze data, generate reports, and share information across countries.
We also use electronic banking systems (EBS), reporting platforms, and test new solutions developed within the METRO group.
How do accountants use IT tools?
Automation is part of our daily work – we use tools that handle repetitive processes, letting us focus on analysis and insights. We work closely with IT teams, test new solutions, analyze system changes, and support partners in implementing them.
This approach helps us maintain high-quality standards while developing our team’s financial technology skills.
